Very clean tight book BUT with slight offsetting to endpapers, slightest dustiness to top edge and one or two slight bumps to extremities. Nevertheless still near Fine. In a good dustwrapper the spine of which is a little darkened, which has two small chips at the top of the spine and which has been sellotaped along the edges by a previous owner. The wrapper, which is not price-clipped, is now protected in a clear removable sleeve. Bookplate on front fixed end-paper. Inscribed by the author on the half-title as follows: " J.A. Spencer from H.E. Bates. September 1930." 320 pages. The author's first novel. Photographs available on request.

The authors' second book and first published novel. Indiscriminate marks to the boards in places and softening to the spine tips otherwise a VG copy in like D/W heavily darkened to the spine, creased with minor wear at the spine tips, rubbed to the extremities and rather soiled. Signed by H E Bates on the FFEP and believed to be his own copy. Enclosed within is a letter (dated 26 May 1930) from The Panton Bookmart a bookseller in Haymarket, London indicating that this is H E Bates own copy with the correction on the inside flap of the D/W by him

London: Jonathan Cape, 1926. A first edition, first printing published by Cape in 1926. Original maroon cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, bottom edge untrimmed. The authors' second book and first published novel. Softening of the spine tips and a touch of foxing to the top edge otherwise a near fine copy. The wrapper is also in near fine condition with a vertical crease along the full length of the spine and a touch of creasing at the spine tips. A lovely, bright and crisp copy. Unusually the wrapper has not had the small clips to all 4 corners and is ½ cm too tall for the book. One can only surmise that this is perhaps a proof dust wrapper of some sort. Clearly it has been folded in half at some stage and stored separately as it is really, bright and crisp. Signed by the author on the half-title. A superior copy of a book usually found to be in less than collectable condition. Very nice indeed. One of 1500 copies.
