The "Grizzly Bear" was Mr. Von Schmidt's first sculpture. This book won the coveted Western Heritage Award for the best Western art book in 1972. The artist began as a cowhand and lumberjack in California in his teenage years and began studying art. As his work became known nationally and internationally, he became a favorite of collectors and was awarded the first gold medal by the trustees of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1968. A near fine copy bound in 1/4 brown leather over red pictorial cloth stamped with the image of a bear in outline, spine lettering gilt, tiny spot to front board, housed within a red cloth covered slipcase, leather label lettered in gilt, tiny bit of wear to bottom corner of opening.
