London [but New York]: Printed for T. Becket and P. A. De Hondt in the Strand [but De Vinne Press], 1768. Very Good+ condition. Volume I only. Clean, square, and tight. Includes the long list of subscribers, but not the rare ad leaf. Bound with half-title. This has the variant reading "vous" (p. 150). The printed date "MDCCLXVIII" appears at the foot of the title page. However, even though there is no certain internal evidence, this is probably a 19th century facsimile reprint. In his book, THE LIFE AND TIMES OF LAURENCE STERNE (p. 604), Wilbur Cross identifies a De Vinne Press facsimile reprint, limited to 100 copies, that was published in 1885. Providence, Rhode Island: Doyle & Hathaway, 1827. Hardcover. Good. 64mo 3" - 4. This edition of a beloved novel by Laurence Sterne (1713-1768), published first just a few weeks before his death, reproduced an earlier reprinting by Thomas Tegg, London, from 1809, and features two black-and-white engravings on steel by Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827). A cute little tome, not quite a miniature book, but close, measuring 4 1/4" x 2 5/8" tall and wide, respectively. Bound in light tan cloth, mottled and soiled a bit, spine head and foot bumped a bit, slight cracking of front paste-down, but with paper label to spine still barely abraded. Inside front flap is penned "No. 49" and then opposite is a gift presentation from an T. E. Coopsay (sp. ?) from June 16, 1828 to a B. Noyes (sp.?) and with extreme flourish. Sterne travelled through France and Italy as far south as Naples, and after returning determined to describe his travels from a sentimental point of view.
