Engraved frontis portrait, engraved title pages, map & 117 steel engraved plates. The plates are good early strikes with little or no foxing William Henry Bartlett, 1809-1854, a noted traveller and highly skilled landscape artist, visited Canada four times between 1836 and 1852. He provided some twenty travelogues with brief texts. The prose text by Willis relates the history and current conditions in Upper and Lower Canada about 1839-40". - Canadian Scenery is considered Bartlett's finest production (Sabin). - "A very deep impression upon the pictorial history of Canada was made by William Henry Bartlett, artist and illustrator". London: James S. Virtue, 1842. 1st Edition. Cloth. Good. BARTLETT, William Henry. 2 vols.: Vol. 1: [5], 128 p.Vol. II: [4], 116 p. 28.5 cm. Violet cloth binding with gold and blind impressing on boards and spine. Pictorial design on front board in gold. Fading and wear at spine and edges of the boards. Bindings repaired. Vol. I includes 54 black and white engravings and a map of the Upper and Lower Canadian territories. Vol. II contains 64 black and white engravings. Gold edges on paper. Text is clear and unmarked, except for some penciling on the lists of illustrations in each volume. Some foxing. William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854) apprenticed with architect and antiquarian John Britton and became known for his drawings and watercolours. This study of the Canadian landscape is the second book on which Bartlett and author Willis collaborated.

Engraved plates recently coloured before rebinding. All plates present as per lists in each section, each with tissue guard. Some thumbing. William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854) apprenticed with architect and antiquarian John Britton before becoming known for his own drawings and watercolours. In 1838, Bartlett was in Upper and Lower Canada and the Maritimes, producing sketches for this volume by American writer Nathaniel Parker Willis. Published 1842, Canadian Scenery Illustrated portrays pioneer days in Canada, from native scenes to cities, from Aylmer, Upper Canada, to Halifax.
