A Penguin Special; S 156. / 'William Gallacher (1881-1965) was a Scottish trade unionist and politician, best known for his role as a leader in the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB). He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for West Fife from 1935 to 1950, and again for West Fife from 1955 to 1957. Born in Paisley, Scotland, Gallacher worked in various manual labor jobs before becoming involved in the labor movement. He was a key figure in the 1919 Glasgow rent strikes and the 40-hour strike, which sought to reduce the working week to 40 hours. These events led to his arrest and imprisonment on charges of incitement to riot.
