His popular history was originally published in 1859. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of an unknown edition, in a leather decorative Victorian binding. Dark blue , stamped with gilt, and the logo of a religious college. The text is clean; 718 pages, with various indices. Paste-downs and edges are marbled. Fancy gilt spine with a red label, rubbed at the margins This is an attractive volume, and an important ethnological resource. However, the spine cover has separated; although present, it will require reglueing before the volume can be called sound. Color lithographic frontispiece of a scene in Bethlehem, numerous full-page color lithographic plates (protected by tissue guards), as well as b/w in-text illustrations of places, people, flora and fauna of the region. Includes the b/w fold-out map, as published. Text printed with notations by subject in margins, i.e. "Conduct of the Women Before and After Death." Two indexes: "Names and Subjects" and "Scripture Texts Illustrated." The author was a missionary in Syria and Palestine for 25 years. Some age wear and staining on binding, tail of spine bumped. Gold on spine faded. Stamp of previous owner on verso of blank page in front of book. Binding in good-, interior in very good condition.

This edition was designed for the British readers which takes us over a part of Southern Syria and over Palestine, but in a direction opposite to that pursued by most travelers. Most often, travelers enter from the South. The author takes us on his tour through the North side. There is a large color folding map of Palestine, a map of lake Tiberias and a folding plan of Jerusalem. An interesting travel book that discusses plants, animals, caves, burial customs and more. Given as a gift presented by the Governors of Christ's Hospital to A.W. Cockmill for Deputy Grecians class examination July, 1921. A beautiful copy bound in full tree calf trimmed in gilt, raised bands with compartments beautifully stamped in gilt, brown morocco spine label gilt, marbled endpapers(renewed at some point) all edges marbled, no foxing except a few spots to endsheets, clean and fresh internally.
