Description:
The Benson Murder Case (American Mystery Classics) by S.S. Van Dine
All of Manhattan high society is abuzz after playboy stockbroker Alvin Benson is discovered dead in a locked room in his brownstone mansion, slumped over in an easy chair with a bullet in his head. Ballistics experts, detectives, and the NYPD's top brass can't solve the crime, but luckily they don't have to: New York's leading flaneur and art connoisseur, Philo Vance, is on the case, and he's got precisely the far-flung and esoteric knowledge needed to interpret the clues and determine whodunnit.
By carefully examining the crime scene and reconstructing the deadly shooting, Vance determines a number of things about the murderer, including his or her height -- and this is only the first of many deductive feats that he will pull off before the investigation comes to a close.
The first novel in one of the most influential detective series of the early twentieth century, The Benson Murder Case features a brain sleuth, a puzzling plot, and… Read More

London: The Readers Library Publishing Company (Duckworth). Photoplay Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 12mo., 251(2)pp. Beautiful "Copyright" Edition. Not dated but c. 1927. Bound in maroon cloth with titles in gilt and decorative borders also in gilt on front board and spine. The Readers Library was an imprint of Gerald Duckworth and Company, reprinting classics from between 1910 and 1927, re-launching as the New Readers Library in 1927 and publishing through 1946. Though notoriously flimsily made, this copy is square, tight and clean throughout with virtually none of the page toning typically found. A hint of wear to heel and the gilt is largely faded on the spine. Paper just starting to split in the gutter of the front paste-down but no cracking to hinge. Gorgeous wrap-around dustjacket has some toning to spine but is fresh and bright with no chipping, creases or tears. Remarkably well-preserved and quite scarce in any condition. A sharp collectable copy and quite uncommon, particularly… Read More

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. Very Good. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. First Edition, with no additional printings listed and Scribner's seal to copyright (predates Scribner's "A" designation). Octavo; xii, [ii], 348pp. Publisher's black cloth with red lettering. Lacks dust jacket. Boards rubbed along edges with exposure and bumping at corners, scuffs down hinges and fore-edge, and a fair bit of smudging and soiling to cloth. Front board shows a run down front pastedown as if a bend was beginning, but there is no correspondence externally. Hinges starting, with front moreso, and book falls open easily between gatherings, but binding is still holding. Spine a bit slanted, with a vertical crease and dulling to lettering. Pages toned but unmarked. A rough but intact copy of the first Philo Vance mystery. Barzun offers that it is also the best of Van Dine's offerings, "partly because V.D. had the real-life model of the Joseph Elwell murder (1920) to hold his fancy in check."… Read More
