Cambridge: Welch, Bigelow, and Company, University Press, 1875. First Edition . Half Leather - Hardbound. Fair+/No Dust Jacket. Royal 4to. Complete in two volumes. Presentation inscription is seen on the title page of Volume I in which the books are presented to Yves Henry Buhler from Hamilton Fish Potter in 1924. Leather over spine and corners, with pebbled cloth over boards. University emblem is gilt stamped on top covers. Raised spine band creating six compartments. Gilt stamped lettering and blind stamped decoration. All edges are gilded. Marbled end leaves. Covers are scuffed, rubbed and worn, though lettering remains good. Joints and hinges with small cracks though both volumes remain tight with no looseness of covers. Several leaves near center of Volume II show creases and tears along upper fore edge, though none affecting text or images. General light wear. With the Class Supper Semi Centennial 1826 - 1876 card made out to Dr. Henry Dyer, with a lengthy list of illustrious signatures on the verso, loosely inserted. Many of the names are Harvard Divinity School graduates, and one is of the cofounder of the noted Transcendental Club which was formed with Ralph Waldo Emerson, George Putnam. This group of New England 19th century intellectuals gave rise to Transcendentalism in the US. The signatures include some of the remarkable graduates of the Class of 1826: J. S. Boston: Houghton, Osgood and Company, 1878. Cloth. Near Fine. A tight, very well-preserved copy of the 1878 2nd printing of this exhaustive history of Harvard, complete in 2 volumes. Both volumes solid and Near Fine in their light-purple, bevelled cloth. Bright, unflecked gilt-insignia (Harvard's crest) and lettering along the front panels and spines. Small former owner inscription at the first blank endpaper of Vol. I, rear inner hinge of same volume tender (but still perfectly sturdy). Dozens of crisp black-and-white plates (with their accompanying tissue-guards) of the campus and a number of the key figures of 19th century Harvard. Thick folios, all edges gilt. Imposing and very impressive.
