One of 250, this one SIGNED BY TRUMAN ON THE LIMITATION PAGE AND INSCRIBED TO MATTHEW CONNELLY BENEATH THE FRONTISPIECE: "To a grand man and loyal public servant. Wish we had more like him/Harry Truman". Connelly was the chief investigator for the Senate Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program, known as the Truman Committee. He subsequently became Executive Assistant to Senator Truman and later as appointments secretary was a close and trusted aide to the President. His reputation was of a no-nonsense, poker-faced man who knew how to get things done. He was convicted in 1956 for accepting a bribe and eventually served six months in federal prison. Truman, ever loyal to his friends, stood by him throughout his ordeal. Royal blue morocco, gilt-lettered backstrip and quotation to front board.
