The SS Morro Castle (named after the 16th century fortress that guarded Havana harbor and first launched in 1930) was an American passenger liner that caught fire at sea and ran aground off Asbury Park, New Jersey on September 8, 1934. The previous night, the ship's captain, Robert Willmot, had suddenly died in his cabin and replaced in command by Chiel Officer William Warms.
