First edition, an unspecified limited edition that preceded the Harper & Brothers first trade edition -- this copy with choice presentation inscription on front flyleaf in blue ballpoint "For / Hon. Adlai Stevenson / Good governor of / Lincoln's Illinois / with sincere / admiration from / a Lincoln Republican / G. Lynn Sumner / New York / Feb. 4, 1952." Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65) was the then-current presidential candidate, and though a diehard Democrat he was also wellknown as a Lincoln admirer. From the library of Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. senator from Illinois (1969-81). Most unusual copy.

Eisenhower, Chief of Staff of the Army, and inscribed "Birthday greetings to Secretary of War Robert Patterson, whose anniversary corresponds with that of Lincoln. Feb. 12, 1945". Robert P. Patterson Sr. (1891 - 1952) During WWII Patterson was appointed Secretary of War when Henry L. Stimson resigned. Patterson was the chief "mobilizer" of US forces in the second World War; his chief responsibility was to rapidly arm a threatened and unprepared America. He supervised the procurement and contracted for the delivery of over $100 billion worth of supplies and equipment. Prior to that Patterson was Under Secretary of War under President Franklin Roosevelt, and a NY judge who served in WWI and received the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism in France.
