Writing on the front pastedown, writing and a bookplate on the front free endpaper, the spine perished but the front board is only beginning to separate, and several ink notations and tipped in corrections throughout the book, good only though still valuable for research purposes. As stated on the title page, this book was printed "for private circulation," thus making it fairly uncommon, particularly as a proof copy. Bookplate is that of Henry I. Shaw, the first chief historian of the U.S. Marine Corps and the author or editor of several of its official histories.
