Binding is somewhat loose because both hinges are cracked, but not detached from text block. Gilt illustration on upper board and spine are dulled. Corner tips are worn through. Both boards have some soil and they and the spine are somewhat faded. Previous owner's name on first blank page and another name stamped on the title page and at least twice in the text itself. About two dozen pages have a small stain mark on them. Otherwise, the pages are clean and unmarked. An extensive book on farming bees for honey production, arranged as an encyclopedia with entries alphabetized. The hardbound cloth brown boards of this book are cosmetically worn and stained, the debossed title and bee decoration are no longer visible, and there is some warping to the rear board, but structurally it is still extremely solid. There is no wear along the top and bottom of the back strip or boards, and the corners remain sharp with minimal bumping. There is a small tear along the gutter of the rear board. in protecting the text block. Spine has a very slight slant with a gap to the green flower endpapers but the hinges are strong with the string binding tight. Text block solid and all pages firmly attached. Age tanning and foxing throughout. Previous owner name on front free endpaper. All interior pages are clean with no tears, cracks, or other previous owner marks. Black embossed cloth, cover art of bee in gilt on front, gilt decorative lettering on spine, lettering & decoration in blind on covers (minor spotting to upper fore-edge, minor dustsoiling), still VG. Early printing of this excellent handbook for the bee keeper. This 1908 edition has been substantially revised and expanded with many new articles, many more biographical references of famed beekeepers, new equipment & techniques, and more. Amos Root (1839-1923) was an intrepid and innovative inventor, marketer, and entrepreneur who founded the Root Company which manufactured beehives and beekeeping equipment, and who improved removable frames so honey could be more easily harvested. The company is still in operation in Medina, OH.

Second edition of the bible of American bee-keeping. The book has been so influential it is now in its 42nd edition. Amos Ives Root (1839–1923) founded the A.I. Root company, a bee-keeping supply and candle company in 1869. It is still in business today.
Condition: Gilt lettering faded somewhat on spine, some rubbing and wear; hinges cracked or starting, endpapers somewhat brittle with a few minor chips or tears; very good.
