Full thin-leather-bound with stamped gilt spine titles. 12mo; 7.5 inches tall; 682 pages; New Edition; Tissue guarded frontispiece of Prescott; all edges gilt. Faint sun-fading on the spine, partial fold 1.5 inches from the front edge of front cover. Bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even toning. Moderate shelf handling wear.. All of the essays except the first were originally contributed to the North American review. Background Information: William Hickling Prescott was an American historian and Hispanist, who is widely recognized by historiographers to have been the first American scientific historian.

This is a worn-covers copy, of which the interior is quite the opposite.  Aside from the pencilled signature in the f.e.p.s, there is only a slight, faded dampstain and a tiny marginal tear or two in the text, making this an adequate replacement to fill in a Prescott series.

Harper and Brothers, 1852. Cloth. Fair. This is an early edition of the great American historian's essay collection. Binding is nice and tight, but leather spine covering has come away, and there is some further loss on corners and covers. Foxing present throughout.

Contemporary brown half-leather with marbled papered boards, gilt decoration and gilt titles in leather title windows at spine. Covers rubbed, scraped, with points of fraying to fore-edges. Foxing throughout, and top corners a bit crinkled. Otherwise, text unmarked and binding secure for normal handling. A collection of articles by American historian William H. Prescott (1796-1859), who specialized in Hispanic studies.

Original 3/4 crushed morocco over marbled paper covered boards, with gold lettering to spine. Raised bands. Marbled endpapers. Tissue-guarded engraved frontispiece portrait of the author. This volume is a collection of articles that William H. Prescott had published in the "North American Review," and now published for the first time in book form. Binding partly rubbed along edges, with sporadic abrasion to paper and leather. First and last leaves with moderate to heavy foxing. Clear water-stain at upper margin of pages 40 to 145, and from pp. 273 to 320 (not affecting lettering). Binding and interior in overall good- to good.
