Description:
London: Frederick Warne, 1855-1866, 1873.. Chromolithographs. 6 x 9-7/8 inches. Ten color plates from Pratt's popular six-volume illustrated work on the flora of Great Britain, issued beginning in 1855; a volume on sedges, ferns and grasses was added in 1873. The work was reprinted several times in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Plates are: from Vol. 1, Plate 15, Penny Cress; Pl. 18, Water Awl-Wort; Pl. 36, Common Milkwort; Pl. 41, Procumbent Pearl Wort. From Vol. 2, Pl. 103, Wild Madder; Pl. 105, Rough Fruited Corn Bed Straw; Pl. 145, Greater Dodder. From Vol. 3, Pl. 158, Knotted Figwort; Pl. 176, Spreading Spiked Sea Lavender; Pl. 187, Slender Headed Persicaria. Overall plates are bright and clean; some show very slight foxing; some corner creasing, and two have very small edge tears.

London: Frederick Warne & Co., 1905. New edition, revised by Edward Step, F.L.S.. Hardcover. Otherwise very good condition. Illustrated with 315 colored plates figuring upwards of 1500 species. Pratt [1806 - 1893] was one of the best known English botanical and ornithological illustrators and authors of the Victorian age. 4 volumes published in different years, small 4to, v1 269pp (1899) , v2 279pp (1905), v3 258pp (1905), v4 215pp (1900), blue decorated cloth binding, embossed design on front cover, with gilt titles on spine and front. Color plates throughout. OCLC 499929334 lists the 1st volume 1899 and vols. 2-4 of the 1905 edition. Covers dusty, rubbed at edges and spine tips. Some foxing on first and last pages, not affecting plates or text. In vol. 4 plate 305 listed twice. A very pleasant readable copy.

London: Frederick Warne & Co, 1870. 6 volumes, 8vo. (8 5/8 x 5 1/2 inches). 315 chromolithographed plates by William Dickes. Contemporary green morocco backed green cloth boards, spines lettered in gilt, period brown endpapers, gilt edges A lovely set with color plates by one of the most successful female botanical authors of the Victorian era. "Her books constituted a major contribution to the advancement of flower study, especially among the general public. All of her books are well composed, with handsome, accurate illustrations" (Kramer). In her lifetime, Pratt published more than 20 books, illustrated with chromolithographs, on which she collaborated with artist William Dickes. This edition of Pratt's magnum opus undated and with titles bearing both the Warne and Co. London imprint as well as the New York imprint of Scribner, Welford and Co. Original one-half black morocco leather over dark green leather-covered boards, spine with five raised bands each decorated with small gilt horizontal lines and sent off by double gilt panel lines, red morocco title label in one compartment lettered in gilt, volume numbered stamped in gilt in one other compartment and with gilt floral design vignette in the remaining four other compartments, all page edges are spectacled in red, lg 8vo.
