With distinguished provenance, with the bookplates of Michael Tomkinson, (1841 - 1921), Royal Axminster carpet manufacturer and noted collector of Japanese art, medieval manuscripts, and early printed books, bearing a large and ornate coat of arms designed by J. James Northcote was one of a number of prominent painters of the 18th century. Today Northcote is chiefly admired for his portraits, though his paintings of animals found favor in his lifetime. Edges a little bruised with minor wear to corners and head of spine. Ownership inscriptions of one M. M. Atwood and S.
