Good (some chipping along spine and rear hinge; contents clean & tight). $50.00.

T. Nelkson and Sons, Paternoster Row. Used - Very Good. 1861. Hardcover. Cloth, no dj. 8vo. Blue cloth with gilt-stamped decorative title on front board and spine. Additional decorations stamped in blind. Volume in acetate cover, taped to edges of boards. Significant sunning to spine. Cloth of spine cut horizontally in several spots, causing it to fray and exposing gauze underneath. Cloth at head of spine partially worn away, some rubbing at tail. Additional minor rubbing to boards. Front hinge quite tender, exposing gauze. Front free endpaper loose, pulling away from hinge. Small stain at bottom corner of first gathering. Similar stain at bottom corner of last gathering. Foxing throughout text block. Slight tenderness at rear hinge, but remains firm, and binding is otherwise sound. With the exception of first three gatherings, text block is uncut. Nine fold-outs at rear of volume. Very Good. (Subject: Books).

[5], vi-xxiv, [1], 25-274 pp. Olive-green cloth with a gilt sailing ship on the front board, copper lettering on the spine. Coated yellow endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated with twelve plates, several of which are folding. Encyclopedia Britannica, "Matthew Fontaine Maury: American hydrographer". Maury's research and travels laid the foundation for global hydrology and oceanography. This publication is considered the first textbook in oceanography. Thanks to Maury's charts, the United States was able to eventually lay down a transatlantic telegraph cable. The author's writings also helped to make shipping and sea travel safer for commercial and recreational sailors. Difficult to find in the first edition. Some wear to the extremities, mild foxing to the pageblock.
