Tile on spine simply a reads Autobiography and the author's last name. Exterior shows minor edge and corner wear, boards are spotted with a light stain at bottom of spine and bottom of the rear board. Pale aqua end pages and front and rear are free and clear of any signatures or bookplates. Pages are toned due to age and some minor foxing is present but binding is tight, no hinge issues noted.

Brown gilt-stamped cloth over boards, patterned end papers, black and white frontispiece portrait of the author with tissue, plus additional frontispiece drawings of "Leptopteris Superba" and "Anhalonium Fissuratum", (xviii), 350 pages, Appendix, Index. Corners and spine ends lightly bumped and worn, covers scuffed, with some light staining, text block soiled, both hinges cracked, frontispiece tissue is foxed and has small tears. SCARCE. [The title is about as direct as the rest of the book. The ramblings of this "crazy Frenchman at Albany" shed very little light on the actual events of his life but give an incredible sense of the energetic character of Louis Menand. There are exuberant paeans to his wife Adelaide (whom he calls "Phanerogyne," meaning "remarkable woman," who died in 1890. There are rambling thoughts on the various revolutions and republics in France, a scathing appraisal of his arrival in a free land "where slavery was flourishing as carnations," and tales of intrigues at flower exhibitions, all told in the least linear style imaginable.
