Garden City, New York: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc, 1938. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 12x12x2. First edition. No jacket. Spine lightly toned, light general wear. 1938 Hard Cover. 301 pp. "The revolt of the parents against the revolt of youth as exemplified by a typical middle-class family of four." Fred Cornplow, shrewd middle-class realist, gradually wakes to find that Sarah, his selfish college graduate daughter, and his son Howard, still irregularly playing football for old Truxon, think of him as intellectually obsolete, as a convenience, as a walking bank account to whom they need return neither affection nor thoughtfulness. With his genius for dramatizing thoughts that…

Word reached the publisher and the result was the addition of Lewis's initials to the olive branch motif on the cover of this and subsequent novels. The novel in an attack on the Communist left as a response the way It can't Happen Here was an attack on the totalitarian right; it deals with the "generation gap" and was soundly criticized by Lewis's former socialistic associates, Upton Sinclair, in particular, who vied the book as an apologia for middle-class values and mores, those same values and mores which Lewis had so well…
