New York:Charles Scribner's Sons. 1894. 1st American edition. xl+456pp. and (xvi)+512pp. Illustrated with 3 maps and 80 illustrations. Hardcover.  Blue decorated boards lightly soiled, rubbed and shelfworn, with wear along edges, spine ends and edge points. Internally free of previous owners marks or signatures.  A few penciled bookseller notes to end pages of volume 1, with light foxing to first and last few pages (including maps) of both volumes. All illustrations present as called for. The bindings are tight but all 4 hinges have either started or are cracked. A few pages along the fore-edges of volume 2 are jammed, with subsequent creasing.  Overall, a near very good set.

Tightly rebound in modern blue cloth with original decorated publisher's cloth on cover, gilt spine; text is remarkably clean. From the Forbes Library in Northampton, Massachusetts with their perforated stamp on title. First American edition of a captivating and elaborate travelogue detailing the author's last major journey through Asia, traveling from London to Tibet. The intended purpose of the journey was to scout out new lands for missionary purposes, with the additional objective of gaining entrance to the Tibetan capital, Lhasa; ultimately, they failed due to the stressed Anglo-Tibetan relations, but Lansdell still saw fit to call the mission a "successful failure" (Vol II, p. 405).
