Leather contemporary half-polished tan calf gilt, red and black moroccco labels on spines, marbled boards. Moderate edge wear, some scuffing and rubbing, institutional bookplates marked withdrawn, small removable stickers on spines. Content is very clean, bindings are strong. A very attractive, good looking set. Pictures sent upon request. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

Vols. 1 and 2 dated 1842; vol. 3, 1843; and vol. 4, 1849. NOT ex-library. Hardcovers, half-bound (spine, part of the boards, and corners) in brown leather over red, white, and blue narrow combed marbled paper. Matching marbled endpapers. All page edges marbled in same pattern as well. Spine has five gilt embellished raised bands and gilt lettering. Title on red panel, author and volume numbers on black panel; remaining panels have elaborate with gilt devices. Hinges NOT cracked. Corners and spine ends bumped and rubbed, with boards exposed at some tips. Covers have moderate surface and edge wear, with some rubbing and peeling to the surface of the leather along exterior hinge lines, edge, and corners. INTERIOR HAS VERY OCCASIONAL FOXING, BUT VAST MAJORITY IS CLEAN AND TIGHT, WITH PAGES OF LAST THREE VOLUMES UNCUT, SO NEVER READ. NO WRITING OR MARKS, ALTHOUGH IT APPEARS SOMETHING WAS ERASED IN VOLUME 1 ONLY. ALL IN ALL, A VERY NICE SET OF A SCARCE WORK.

With the bookplates of Sir Richard Henry Charles Rycroft, 3rd Baronet. Each volume with a gift inscription dated March 7th, 1852, "Henry Richard Roycoft from his affec. Father and Mother on his 11th birthday. Richard H.C. Roycroft, Charlotte A. Roycroft". Sadly, Henry Richard Roycroft died two years later, in 1854. A SCARCE history in fine contemporary binding.
