James Boyd, (1888 - 1944), was born in Pennsylvania. DRUMS, his first book is often called the best novel about the Revolutionary War. As a result of his service in WWI, he experienced ill health and moved into a home his grandfather had built, in Weymouth, NC. In 1940 he organized the Free Company of Players, a group of American writers, which included Thomas Wolfe, Sherwood Anderson, William Faulkner, Struthers Burt, Paul Green, and John Galsworthy. .

Clean gray boards decorated with lettering on orange rectangle with green letters and a soldier on horse. clean endpapers with no writing and no cracks. The text is clean, binding tight. Top page edges green.Lower front has embossed design containing bird ands the letters 'G D'. Very handsome. Corners unbumped except a small bump at base of spine. All paper has yellow toning. No jacket. Spine slightly suned.
