Paste-on color cover illustration, youth meeting older man. Decorated title page. Green decorated endpapers. 4x7in. Paper covered boards. Autobiographical fiction, a boy at school. Published first in 1857, signed "An Old Boy". Parallels to Hughes later brought acknowledgment. Color frontispiece bears an artist's signature but not decipherable (a bird has upset a mortar & pestle, apparently stirring up an odor by looks of others) in lab setting. Published after death of Hughes (1896) and after a statue in his honor was erected at his school, notations in Strang's Introduction.

Loose hinges. Previous owner's bookplate and writing on front inside cover. Newspaper clipping discussing author's relationship to the character in the story adhered on second free endpaper with pencil note "Dec 1912" across it. Interior pages are rippled, water stain to edges, foxing spots, tanned. Book in Good- to Good condition.. Author's Edition. Hard Cover. Good. Size: Approx. 4 1/2" x 7 1/4. Fiction.
