Quarto. xxiv, 602pp. Folding frontispiece, 26 plates (5 folding), colored folding map. Original gilt-lettered red cloth. A fine copy with pictorial dust jacket. Heriot was the deputy postmaster general of British North America, and in this capacity had the opportunity to travel throughout Canada and the northern United States. Heriot's book is one of the most important Canadian travel narratives, and contains an account of his various excursions between 1800 and 1806. The second part provides detailed descriptions of many of the North American Indian groups, including material taken from Lahontan, Mackenzie, Vancouver, and others, as well as the Jesuit manuscripts in Montreal..

Very minor rippling to the top corner of pages 121-183. Title continues "...with an Account of the productions, commerce, and inhabitants of those provinces: to which is subjoined a comparative view of the manners and customs of several of the Indian nations of North and South America." George Heriot arrived in Canada in 1792, the beginning of a quarter-century association with the colony. In his first years. In 1796, he returned to Britain, travelling along the south coast and in Wales before spending some months at the University of Edinburgh.
