Description:
New York, NY: Book-of-the-Month Club, 1993. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Clean, tight, unmarked; very slight wear to spine extremes; otherwise absolute minimal wear; Published posthumously in 1964, these sketches of Ernest Hemingway's life as a young man in Paris from 1921 to 1926 constitute a luminous love letter to a city and a now-famous era. Hemingway's portraits of such contemporaries as Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, James Joyce, and F. Scott Fitzgerald, as well as his evocations of his first years of marriage, glow with joy. "There is never any ending to Paris," Hemingway writes, "and the memory of each person who has lived in its differs from that of any other. We always returned to it no matter who we were or how it was changed or with what difficulties, or ease, it could be reached. Paris was always worth it and you received return for whatever you brought to it. But this is how Paris was in the early days when we were very poor and very happy.
