Like the other Country Life books authored by Tipping, this one captures a vanishing way of life, and there is a beauty and satisfaction to the black and white photos that can elude color photos. Above all else there is a meticulousness to the prose accompanying the photos that brings a rigor to the subject that is both accessible and yet raises this book from a trivil coffee table book. Gardening is treated not as a minor decorative art but as a glory of civilization, one of history and historical movement, and one deserving of serious contemplation. Minor soilage to green boards.
