Jacket with a few small cuts and nicks ro edges.The Panama-California Exposition, later renamed Panama California International Exposition, was held in San Diego from 1915 to 1917, celebrating the opening of the Panama Canal and of San Diego being the first US port of call for ships going westward through the canal. Bertram Goodhue (1869 - 1924) was a renowned architect and type designer, known for his works in Gothic Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival styles.

While both events celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal, both also had secondary purposes: San Francisco to showcase the city's resurrection from the ashes of the 1906 earthquake and fire; San Diego to showcase its fine seaport, the first US port of call to ships coming through the Canal.

In the publisher's original 2-piece carton, which has some splits at the corner joints and side panels, but mostly intact. A most beautiful early book from the Merrymount Press, whose first spread contains a Kelmscott-like elaborate red-stamped border around the first illustration and the first text leaf, featuring some important figures in Catholic theology. The photogravure plates depicting the staff itself are arrestingly beautiful; highly detailed and with a texture that can only be experienced in person. This is number XXV [25] of 150 limited copies.
