Name of former owner and minor writing on the first blank prelim. Pages are lightly tanned and mostly clean.

The volumes have not been pillaged for plates, but all the plates show some foxing, ranging from marginal and slight to invasive and severe. Still a usable working copy for an individual scholar; otherwise a binding copy only.

All plates present, including two coloured; many of the illustrations referred to as vignettes by Gell are present as tipped-in mini-plates. Condition notes: Plates overall in very good condition, with blank leaves as guards (not tissue guards); there is a general tendency to age darkening but only one or two of the plates are significantly browned or foxed. Particular exceptions are the Portrait and frontis of Volume 1, which are detached (the latter with title page and first leaf of Contents lists), with foxing and rolled edges and the frontis of Volume 2, which is detached and badly foxed. Externally both volumes are in a poor way; spine strips have parted from rear boards, leather is very rubbed, spine strip of Volume 2 split. Bound in full red straight grained morocco decorated in gilt, rebacked with original gilt decorated spine laid down, all edges gilt, renewed endpapers, the first three pages of volume one with scattered foxing, internally mostly clean with ocassional spots of foxing, previous owner's name dated Christmas, 1882. A very good set of this important work.
