Harper & Row, 1962; stated first edition; xiv, 240pp. Binding is tight, sturdy, and square; navy and grey-brown quarter-cloth boards very good save toning in a "V" shape along top edge near spine where exposed by loss to jacket; gilt titling remains bright and bold. Clipped jacket a bit chipworn in addition to one larger loss of about 1 1/2" in "V" shape to top edge near spine; rear panel shows light rubbing/toning. Interior is free of previous owner markings and ships same or next day from Dinkytown, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Also a gift page has been bound in: "With best wishes from your friends at The New Yorker October 1962" ([please see our photo). Small spot at top center of front pastedown; age toning present to top edge of text block. Otherwise pages are very clean and securely bound. Dust jacket in mylar shows a cup ring on lower front, and tiny chips missing to either end of spine. Mild wear present to edges, with light browning to edges of flaps.

Near fine/near fine. Handsome and tight early (not first) printing of this gathering of "New Yorker" letters -- with a twist: From the library of Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. Senator from Illinois, and before him of his father, Illinois governor and twice Democratic presidential candidate Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65). Governor Stevenson clearly read this copy, for he has pencilled neat small checkmarks on about one dozen pages where he is referenced, and on the front flyleaf he pencils "Page" and lists eight of those pages; lastly he pencils a cryptic number on rear jacket flap.
