A very early and well loved copy in scarlet cloth and silver pictorial band which is nice and bright with light wear. Corners dinged with rubbing through cloth and tears/chips to spine ends. Silver band around cloth rubbing away at edges of spine. Some marks/spots to cloth and loss of pigment at top tinted page ends. Hinges split at title page and pages 456/457 with mull showing and are loose, but still holding. Tape shadows to half-title, following page and title page from previous reinforcement. In beautiful new high quality facsimile jacket.

PLEASE SEE PHOTOS. 1940 special edition with the pre-printed signatures of the Cast of the movie. It has a few dates like the floating 8 in 1938, light R denotes special run(1st) and the illustrations copyright 1939, but there are none. This might have been the last of the red cloth covers because 1940 was the year the green BCE came out and the other Re-Print Publishers had a release also. And I believe Doran got bought out(or died) that was why Garden City got used to sseparate the monies. WOW a lot this issue had going on.
And it is in such great conition too.

Condition: The hardback is in VeryGood plus condition. It retains the upper paper edge gray topstain. The bright silver bands have a small separation at the edge of the spine. The corners are square with no lean. Text is clean without stains or tears. The book is elegantly signed by the original owner on the FFEP. The Dust Jacket is in Very Good condition as a later state book club version. It is bright with chips at the upper and lower fold edges and spine without any loss of text.
