Front inner hinge is weak but holding well. Moderate wear at extremities. Light wear at head and heal of spine.. An earlly edition, originally published by Smith. Elder in 1853. Virginia Woolf felt this novel was superior to Jane Eyre.

Hardcover Condition: Very Good. 4 volumes by Harper & Brothers. Published in 1874. Illustrated with frontispiece and tissue guards. Green cloth. Spine lean to each volume. Bindings are tight and secure. Contemporary ownership inscription from 1874 on flyleaf. Some rubbing and wear to the tips and edges. Mild spotting to the hardcover. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall has some mild moisture staining to title page, frontispiece, flyleaves, and few other pages. Light, scattered spots on some pages in all four volumes. Clean interior pages overall.

This is an extremely RARE edition, I can find no others available. Among the challenges Charlotte encountered was the prejudices regarding women and authors so Christian names positively masculine, while we did not like to declare ourselves women, because – without at that time suspecting that our mode of writing and thinking was not what is called "feminine".Description: Black calf leather spine with 5 bands, gilt lettering and lines; marble boards, marble end papers. Warm ivory toned pages are clean, unmarked. Strong, tight spine; green satin page marker. Overall condition is very fine.

Text in double columns, collating: 184, [4 leaves ads]. A bit of foxing, otherwise a Very Good copy. Smith claims no priority between this edition and the one in cloth, but the differing page-counts suggest priority exists (the type was completely reset and the clothbound copy has over 500 pages); either way the wrapper edition is much scarcer.
