Pre-WWII Fiction set in Germany; first punlished in 1935 and 1939, the two novels known as The Berlin Stories are related. Hitler was beginning his move to power in 1931. These 'fiction' works are 'dramatized memoirs' if the period 1929-1933 when Isherwood lived in Berlin. The episodes are comic in a way that reveals truths about Hitler's Germany, truths not so clear in history books. Isherwood was British and became a US citizen.
