London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1857. Soft cover. Good. Interesting, scarce, early reprint edition of Bronte's phenomenally successful 1847 novel. Despite its success, Jane Eyre was still only available as a costly three volume, triple decker, set. In response Smith, Elder & Co. produced this cheap single volume edition, along with Bronte's (still publishing under the name Currer Bell) other works, as well as those of her sisters. Bound in eye-catching yellow paper covers and priced at 2 shillings and sixpence, more than 20,000 copies were sold. Despite this, examples are now rare. 12mo. 467pp + 4 pages of advertisements to rear. Plus advertisements to rear cover. End-papers replaced. Spine toned.
