Rubbing and surface loss to boards. Front inner hinge cracked but holding, light foxing to endpapers and margins throughout. Contents remain complete and unmarked, in a sound binding.

Stated fifth edition of this classic work of popular natural history, illustrated with the much-admired wood engravings of Thomas Bewick. Binding made by Arno Werner.

Stated 8th Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. A new full red morocco leather binding in exceptional condition. The paper is fine, with no stains, no browning and no foxing. The advantage of the later editions is the addition of several animals from New South Wales. Pages x, 526. Bewick set a new standard for quality woodcuts with this famous book, first published in 1790. The binding has raised bands on the spine and bright gilt title and author lettering, and gilt emblems in the other four spine panels. Handsewn Japanese silk endbands. Hand marbled endpapers from Scotland. Just barely a quarton at ten inches tall. .

Bound by in 3/4 leather with marble paper covered cloth boards and gilt titles present to the spine. Marbled endpapers. Boards have shelfwear present (corners, joints, and ends of spines rubbed (all joints sound ). No ownership marks present. Foxing present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. In the addenda, Bewick includes an early mention of two Australian species-- the figures and descriptions of two very rare animals, sent from New South Wales, by James Hunter, Esq. Governor of that settlement . The two animals are the Wombach (sic) and an as yet unnamed amphibious animal with a bill similar to that of a duck. E-154; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

Thomas Bewick [1754-1828] was a printmaker and naturalist who revived the art of wood engraving as a major printing technique.
