Chapters of this short novel, never completed by Beardsley, were published posthumously in expurgated form in THE SAVOY during 1896. These chapters were reprinted in 1904 by John Lane in a collection of essays and verse called UNDER THE HILL AND OTHER ESSAYS. The complete text was privately printed in 1907 by Leonard Smithers, and this in turn was published in New York in 1927. The Olympia Press first published their edition, with Glassco's attempt at completion, in a limited edition in 1959. 105.

Fine in gray cloth with silver lettering in a near fine dust jacket (dj is slightly bumped on the front fold and at the side of the spine) . First US printing. The title page continues with "in which is set forth an exact account of the manner of state held by Madam Venus, goddess & meretrix, under the famous Horselberg, and containing the adventures of Tannhuser in that place, his journeying to Rome, and return to the loving mountain, now completed by John Glassco." Left uncompleted at Beardsley's death, this edition is based on Glassco's careful collating of three earlier texts by and it includes all of the original Beardsley illustrations. Originally published in France, this first US edition has a slightly modified introduction which includes a paragraph about Edmund Wilson's appreciation of Beardsley. DJ glossy white background lightly soiled overall, colorfully illustrated at center front in blues and marbled background. DJ has light wear to top front edge, nick with very slight wear at spine top edge, two very tiny creases along top back edge, very slight wear to top tips, DJ flaps creased inside, and lightly soiled overall. Fair DJ/Very Fine book.
