Publisher's original maroon cloth with embossed floral decorations in blind to the boards with gilt titling to the front board and spine. xxx; 252 pages + 4 pages of publisher's adverts to rear. 40 illustrations by C E Brock (all present). Slight fading to the spine, softening to the head and tail of the spine, minor rubbing to the extremities. Overall, a solid VG copy with foxing to the early/late pages of the book. Front hinge starting. Two former owner's names to the front free end-paper. Virtually no foxing to the interior. No D/W. Quite a nice copy. NB: A bibliographical note: this is the First Edition Thus from 1895 and NOT the 1899 Reprint. Photographs/scans available upon request.

Mixed editions; 6 vols in 5, sml. 8vo (188 x 135 mm); illustrated by Hugh Thomson except for Pride & Prejudice, which is by Charles Brock, age-toning or spotting to illustrated frontispiece tissue-guards, spotting to endpapers and some of the advertisement leaves, with only some spotting to the half-title and title-page of Northanger Abbey and the odd minor, peripheral spot to a few leaves in Emma, otherwise internally near-fine; publisher's highly decorated cloth, gilt lettering and all edges gilt, mild rubbing to extremities, spines evenly faded, otherwise very good indeed and in all, a most attractive set. Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) renowned illustrator, in pen and ink, of classic titles; he was born in Ireland where his skills as an illustrator were recognised while still a teenager. Octavo (20 x 14 x 18cm). With an introduction by Austin Dobson to each volume, profusely illustrated throughout by Charles Brock for Pride and Prejudice and Hugh Thomson for the all the other titles. Recently bound in navy half calf, with raised bands, gilt titles to burgundy labels, further gilt tooling to spines, and matching cloth over boards. All edges untrimmed. Nice clean copies, gently toned throughout. Presented in attractive new leather bindings. Book Collector No.271, 'The Great Illustrators'.

Bound in publisher's original burgundy cloth with boards ornately patterned in blind, with gilt titles to spine and upper board. Near Fine with slight fading to spine, bookplate of William Heighway to front pastedown, some foxing to textblock edge and endsheets, small tear to corner of tissue guard. A beautiful copy, signed and with a wonderful original illustration by Brock.
