William Blackwood and Sons, London, 1843, 1844. Hardcover. Very Good. 3 vols. from a 10-vol. set: Vol. I 6th ed. 1844; vol. IV 5th ed. 1843; vol. X 2d edition 1844. Only markings are the former owner's name with date of 1846 in ornate hand on the front end paper of Vol. I, and a small gold sticker of former book seller on front paste down. Paper is very fine, only mildly age-toned with intermittent foxing. All vols. are firm, fully bound in calf, with still vivid marbled end papers and edges, raised, gilt-lined bands on spine, with "Alison's Europe" in gilt lettering on red label and vol. nos. and dates in gilt on brown label beneath, gilt-filled tooling in floral design in gilt-lined compartments. Some rubbing and bumping, but it is minimal, no chipping. This work slightly predates Carlyle's The French Revolution.
