Admiral of the Fleet George Anson, 1st Baron Anson (1697-1762), was a Royal Navy officer. He served as a junior officer during the War of the Spanish Succession and then saw active service against Spain at the Battle of Cape Passaro during the War of the Quadruple Alliance. He then undertook a circumnavigation of the globe during the War of Jenkins' Ear. (24)pp, 548pp. (4)pp. publisher's ads. (complete although pagination after p. 296 is misnumbered 304-548 with all catchwords matching) 3 large folding maps, one with a few old tape mends. Bound in full calf, beautifully rebacked to style, raised bands with gilt title within one compartment. Bookplate of Stoneleigh Abbey, home of the Leigh family from 1561 to 1990 and visited by several famous people including Jane Austen. Anson's later editions provided maps and illustrations of those places he visited from information he later found through the government of those countries, people he had met and earlier manuscripts.
