Jewitt was an armorer on board the merchant ship "Boston" which rounded the Horn and sailed up the west coast as far as Nootka Sound, where the ship was attacked by Indians. All of the crew were killed except Jewitt and another crewman. He was eventually rescued by the brig "Lydia" of Boston, and returned to that port after sailing to China. The details of the adventures of Jewitt were drawn from him by the indefatigable queries of Richard Alsop... Middletown, CT: Seth Richards, 1815. Second Edition. 12mo (18cm). Contemporary full marbled sheep, titled in gilt on spine; plain endpapers; 204pp; wood-engraved frontispiece. Ownership inscriptions to front pastedown. Sound, externally rubbed with minor wear, internally rubbed and foxed, with horizontal tears to three early leaves, frontispiece and title page somewhat tattered and chipped, loss to frontispiece affecting image, but complete and Good. Jewitt spent two and a half years as the captive of the Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) people in what is now British Columbia from 1803-1805. His memoir, now a valuable account of Nuu-chah-nulth culture, went into several editions. In 1815 it was also published in New York, and in Middletown under the imprint of Loomis & Richards. Boards worn but in reasonable condition for an American book of this date. Original endpapers with a number of early American signatures. modern bookplate on the front pastedown. Engraved frontispiece. Light foxing and soiling, otherwise a much better than normal copy of the book. Hilton Smith 32. Howes 5380. Smith 5206 Jewitt was an English armorer on board the American ship Boston that landed in Nootka Sound in March of 1803. Chief Maquinna and the natives ended up slaughtering the Captain and all of the crew except Jewitt and the sail maker John Thompson. Upon escaping and making his way back to Boston, Jewitt published his narrative under the title A Journal Kept at Nootka Sound. This later enhanced edition is based on conversations with Jewitt.
