Sound, externally rubbed with minor wear, internally rubbed and foxed, with horizontal tears to three early leaves, frontispiece and title page somewhat tattered and chipped, loss to frontispiece affecting image, but complete and Good. Jewitt spent two and a half years as the captive of the Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) people in what is now British Columbia from 1803-1805. His memoir, now a valuable account of Nuu-chah-nulth culture, went into several editions. In 1815 it was also published in New York, and in Middletown under the imprint of Loomis & Richards. Chief Maquinna and the natives ended up slaughtering the Captain and all of the crew except Jewitt and the sail maker John Thompson. Upon escaping and making his way back to Boston, Jewitt published his narrative under the title A Journal Kept at Nootka Sound. This later enhanced edition is based on conversations with Jewitt.
