Description:
12 mo, publisher cloth backed boards, illustrated with wood engravings, some in color (probably by early owner) 166 pp. Boards are worn and soiled with some chipping at edges, and some fading to title wording. Early owner signatures to preliminaries. Also, some light foxing and a few chips to edges of a couple of pages, but not affecting text The present work appears to be a reworking of a journal published by Jewitt in Boston in 1807. At least two editions were published of this book in 1815, one in Connecticut and the present volume, which was published in New York. Despite the fact that this work was published in numerous editions, Alsop felt he didn't really do Jewitt any real good, because he seemed to be reduced to a vagabond like existence marching around the country hawking his book (Field). According to Streeter Jewitt was the first white man to live with the Indians in Nootka Sound, and the work presents an excellent account of his adventures. Considered a very accurate portrayal of the…

Description:
Sm. Middletown: Seth Richards, 1815. Sm. 8vo, 204 pp. With an engraved frontispiece of the ship Boston being taken over by the natives. Original calf, red morocco label, a bit worn but quite sound. Early ink signature at the front of A. Van Vechten the politician and lawyer. § Second edition (so stated at the end), presumably thus because of Jewitt's "Journal Kept at Nootka Sound" (Boston, 1807). A fascinating account of the massacre of all but two of the crew of the "Boston" and how they escaped by engineering a switch with another vessel that had arrived some 3 years later. Jewitt provides a detailed narrative that covers all areas of life in the tribe's village, including their physical appearance, clothing, buildings, food, music, ceremonies and religion. Hill 887: "The work gives many particulars concerning the life and habits of the Indians of Vancouver Island, together with a three-page vocabulary and the war-song of the Nootka tribesmen. The indigenous people here referred to as Nootka are…
