Middletown, CT: Seth Richards, 1815. Second Edition. 12mo (18cm). Contemporary full marbled sheep, titled in gilt on spine; plain endpapers; 204pp; wood-engraved frontispiece. Ownership inscriptions to front pastedown. Sound, externally rubbed with minor wear, internally rubbed and foxed, with horizontal tears to three early leaves, frontispiece and title page somewhat tattered and chipped, loss to frontispiece affecting image, but complete and Good. Jewitt spent two and a half years as the captive of the Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) people in what is now British Columbia from 1803-1805. His memoir, now a valuable account of Nuu-chah-nulth culture, went into several editions. In 1815 it was also published in New York, and in Middletown under the imprint of Loomis & Richards. Early ink signature at the front of A. Van Vechten the politician and lawyer. § Second edition (so stated at the end), presumably thus because of Jewitt's "Journal Kept at Nootka Sound" (Boston, 1807). A fascinating account of the massacre of all but two of the crew of the "Boston" and how they escaped by engineering a switch with another vessel that had arrived some 3 years later. Jewitt provides a detailed narrative that covers all areas of life in the tribe's village, including their physical appearance, clothing, buildings, food, music, ceremonies and religion.
