Description:
New York: for the Publisher, n.d. Jewitt was an armorer on board the merchant ship "Boston" which rounded the Horn and sailed up the west coast as far as Nootka Sound, where the ship was attacked by Indians. All of the crew were killed except Jewitt and another crewman. He was eventually rescued by the brig "Lydia" of Boston, and returned to that port after sailing to China. The details of the adventures of Jewitt were drawn from him by the indefatigable queries of Richard Alsop... The narrative affords us many new and interesting particulars of the life and habits of the most savage of American aborigines.Field 776. See also Howes A-189, Huntress 181 C. Hill 887. Jewitt wrote his own account, which was published in 1807. Bound in original pictorial board which have been rebacked in brown cloth with paper spine label. Front cover rubbed, minor water staining. A good copy.. 16.5 cm. (166 pp. b/w frontispiece, illustrations in text

Description:
Sm. Middletown: Seth Richards, 1815. Sm. 8vo, 204 pp. With an engraved frontispiece of the ship Boston being taken over by the natives. Original calf, red morocco label, a bit worn but quite sound. Early ink signature at the front of A. Van Vechten the politician and lawyer. § Second edition (so stated at the end), presumably thus because of Jewitt's "Journal Kept at Nootka Sound" (Boston, 1807). A fascinating account of the massacre of all but two of the crew of the "Boston" and how they escaped by engineering a switch with another vessel that had arrived some 3 years later. Jewitt provides a detailed narrative that covers all areas of life in the tribe's village, including their physical appearance, clothing, buildings, food, music, ceremonies and religion. Hill 887: "The work gives many particulars concerning the life and habits of the Indians of Vancouver Island, together with a three-page vocabulary and the war-song of the Nootka tribesmen. The indigenous people here referred to as Nootka are…
