Somewhat recently attributed to Richard Allestree, The Whole Duty of Man was first published in 1658, anonymously, expounded on Anglican traditions, in a Protestant devotional form. This includes sections that adopt a sermon-like tone, as well as several sections of prayers. Richard Allestree was an English Royalist churchman, imprisoned briefly for his views. He published several collections of sermons, and served as provost of Eton College. Provenance: large bookplate indicates this was a gift from Henry Hoare, presumably the English banker of the same name. The name Mary Woolridge is handwritten on the decorative half-title, with the date July 10, 1775. FAIR condition, LACKING the aforementioned contents pages at the end. Full brown calf leather.The front panel is detached.Considerable wear to the board extremities, Spine has raised bands and is rubbed. Internally clean. This is an English high church 'protestant' devotional work, first published anonymously, with an introduction by Henry Hammond, in 1658. It was both popular and influential for two centuries, in the Anglican tradition it helped to define. The title is taken from Ecclesiastes 12:13, in the King James Version of the Bible: Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.. C & J Rivington,, 1824. Sm. 8vo., contemporary full tree calf, SPCK roundel blocked in blind on upper board, back with six bands ruled in gilt, red sprinkled edges, neatly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, an unusually bright, clean copy. Complete with half-title, and with the contemporary trade stamp of John Bird, bookbinder of Hatton Garden, on front paste-down. The Rivingtons were at this stage booksellers to SPCK. The Royalist divine Richard Allestree is generally regarded as the primary, if not sole, author, an attribution first given in Nichols' Anecdotes, ii. 603. SCARCE IN ANYTHING LIKE THIS CONDITION.

SPCK,, 1838. 8vo., neat contemporary inscription on front free endpaper verso; original publisher's binding of full black roan, upper board blocked and lettered in gilt, back with flat bands, second compartment lettered in gilt, red sprinkled edges, a remarkably well-preserved, crisp, clean copy. The SPCK edition is (unaccountably) far scarcer that the usual 1838 edition revised by Bent. Includes Private Devotions for several Occasions. VERY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION.
