Description:
New York: R. M'Dermut & D.D. Arden, 1814. Hardcover. Brown calf, red spine label. Good. 316 pages. 18.5 x 11 cm. [9 plates]. An interesting copy of this first New York edition - it is one of those odd copies with some printing irregularities that make it just a little more appealing. Originally this copy SHOULD have 8 plates but this imprint has two #1 plates which is fortunate as the first is torn at the bottom and the second is intact. The other charming addition to this copy is the stamped/embossed exlibris of Mario Ruspoli (1925-1986), the director and actor who was also a gastronomist. The book, as the story is told, was originally conceived by Mrs. Rundell while collecting receipts of cookery and household management for the benefit of her married daughters. After sending the manuscript to John Murray, an old family friend, it was published and became an immense success. Rundell modestly claimed that her book was not only essential to the "modern" middle-class housewife but a gift to the public.… Read More

Description:
London: John Murray, Albemarle Street, 1818. Octavo, 354 pages. Index, ads. Frontispiece ("Domestic Cookery"), and nine full-page plates of various meats. New edition, revised and corrected. Originally printed in late 1805 but dated forward to 1806. The book went through dozens of printings, and was one of the most profitable books published by Murray. This 1818 printing appeared just a few years after Mrs. Rundell had started to express misgivings about Murray's handling of the book's fortunes. A legal injunction led to a stalemate, but publication continued. This has been called the "earliest manual of household management with any pretensions to completeness, it called forth many imitations." (DNB). Internally very good, with the text and plates clean and supple. In a make-do binding, early linen pasted-down over original cloth, affixed with pins and linen tape. Overall near very good. [Bitting page 410; Cagle 971(both other printings)].

Description:
2nd Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. Rebacked into lovely VG but untitled burgundy covers, 2nd edn, recipes here may well have been made for Presidents Monroe, Madison and Jefferson then living. Also many household tips, 352pps w/index. Recipes for stewed tongue, prawn curry, thornback, sauce Robart, buttered orange, many sophisticated now obsolete recipes; many instructions on dealing with servants. Rare, measures 6 1/2 x 4 1/4". The first edition of 1806 was a short collection of Mrs Rundell's recipes. It went through dozens of editions, both legitimate and pirated, in both Britain and the United States, where the first edition was published in 1807. The frontispiece typically credited the authorship to "A Lady". Sales of A New System of Domestic Cookery helped to found the John Murray publishing empire. Sales in Britain were over 245,000; worldwide, over 500,000; the book stayed in print until the 1880s. (per Wikipedia) Perfect for the chef/cook who has everything else.
