Bound in tan paper-covered boards over maroon cloth, with black lettering printed on cover. Former owner's bookplate on front pastedown. Edges worn; cover yellowed with lettering faded; endpapers with offsetting. Eminent sinologist and British diplomat E. T. C. Werner (Myths and Legends of China) revised this edition. Werner's daughter was a murder victim in the unsolved 1937 crime superbly explored in Midnight in Peking, the true-crime page-turner by Paul. French.
