About This Item
Mineola, New York: Dover Publications, 2000. Soft cover. Very Good. 5x0x8. Dover Publications, 2000. Unabridged. Classic French comedy by Moliere, pen name for Jean Baptiste Poquelin, 1622-1673. This Dover Edition first published in 2000, contains the unabridged text of "Tartuffe" based on the 1739 prose translation from the French by H. Baker and J. Miller. Pictorial wrapper in oranges, clean and unmarked, light wear to edges, binding solid, pages spotless. Endpaper and copyright page have a small nick to fore-edge. Moliere delighted in lampooning the social pretensions and conceits of 17th-century French society. In this 1664 verse comedy with serious overtones, Tartuffe, a penniless scoundrel and religious poseur, is invited by a gullible benefactor to live in his home--havoc reigns. Attacked by the Church and twice suppressed, "Tartuffe" opened to packed houses in 1669. A timeless comedy. 64 pages. 8.25 X 5.25 inches. 2000, Dover Publications, Mineola, New York.
