About This Item
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1917. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Firts edition. Hardcover in decorated green cloth. 345 pp. A tight, near fine copy with a bit of rubbing to the publisher imprint on the foot of the spine. Published during World War I, a novel of a peaceable New England clammer and small farmer, his wife, and two young children. The story proceeds with descriptions of everyday, normal life around the area but , though insulated from the war, it is never far from eveyone's thoughts; when gazing out over their little harbor, they consider submarines and whether the enemy can reach them. There is romance, a report of German subs off Nantucket, a clambake, and the eventual sighting of a submarine that turns out to be a whale.
