[2], iii-iv, [2], 1-399, [1], [2] (pages of publisher's advertisements), [2] pp. Blue publisher's cloth with gilt lettering and gilt rules and decorations on the spine. Henderson 470. Wright III 4664. Another novel featuring Green's New York police force detective, Ebenezer Gryce. Green is considered "the mother of the detective novel". Difficult to find in commerce. A contemporary name plate and stamp of Captain William P. Rogers, and a Columbus, OH. bookseller and stationer's ticket on the front pastedown (McClelland & Co.). The front gutter slightly strained at one spot but the binding is tight and secure.
