About Item: 241 pages. William Allen Butler (1825-1902) was a lawyer in New York (and one-time president of the American Bar Association) who wrote poetic satires. He published his most famous poem, Nothing to Wear, anonymously in 1857 in Harper's Weekly but stepped forward to claim his work after someone else tried to claim credit for it. The book is inscribed and signed by William Allen Butler to E. Francis Hyde, Esq. a legal colleague and dated January 1903. Book includes an engraved portrait of Butler opposite title page, with tissue intact.
