Spines worn, but some gilt remains. Marcus Annaeus Lucanus (39-65 CE), was an important Roman poet, born in Cordoba. One of the outstanding figures of the Imperial Latin period, his youth and speed of composition set him apart from others. The Pharsalia is an epic poem on the Roman Civil War. It is considered the greatest epic in Latin after the Aeneid. It depicts the Battle of Pharsalus (48 BC) where Julius Caesar defeated Pompey. Lucan's poetic talent apparently aroused the jealously of the Emperor Nero.
